I don’t get to use my French much these days so please excuse me if I take advantage of the opportunity here. Merci Beaucoup of course means Thank you very much. I have much to be thankful for and there are many in the church for whom I am very thankful.

I’m sure that most who read this article have at one time or another expressed concern about the moral direction our country seems to be taking. We are troubled by court decisions that rather than protecting religious freedom seem rather to prohibit those freedoms. Our hearts are broken by decisions that permit the infanticide of the unborn in the name of casual sex. Marriage seemingly is losing its significance as we move from a traditional concept to official recognition of gay and lesbian relationships to recent call for the recognition of polygamous relationships. We’re frustrated and even frightened as we see schools taking the responsibility for raising our children out of our hands and entrusting it to the state. The courts and the politicians have left us at times wondering what we can do.

Peter and John were going up to the temple one day and were confronted by a beggar who asked them for money. Peter’s classic response cut to the core of the problem. He said to the man: “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” Acts 3:6 NLT In the state he found himself, silver and gold were what the beggar thought he needed. It was what he hoped Peter and John could give him. Peter of course realized that as long as the man remained a cripple he would need to beg. If he were healed, he would be able to fend for himself. Peter bypassed the secondary need and went to the core of the problem.

It is no ‘accident’ that we are having two missionary conventions this year. In fact, I have been very touched that God in his wisdom has considered us worthy of a “second touch.” He knows our needs, He knows our potential and He’s not done with us yet. He knows what this church is capable of doing and has placed His hand upon us to keep us moving forward. His “Marshall” plan for us is to stimulate our vision that we might lift our eyes from ourselves to look “on the fields that are ripe and ready for harvest.”

If you use your computer much you are very much aware of the internet mail that is forwarded each day. Some of it is funny, some cute, some inspirational, some political, some absurb etc. With the computer and the internet it is all too easy to send the material on to others. Because it is so easy to pass material on, it is vital that we learn to think before we click.

Last month I shared some thoughts with you from the book Reveal, which was principally written by Greg Hawkins and Cathy Parkinson and published by the Willow Creek Association. The book as we mentioned was written as a result of an extensive survey done at the Willow Creek church. The survey attempted to ask those involved “Where Are You?” Having asked the questions and done the survey, the second part of the book attempted to analyze the answers and in effect tried to ascertain how the people were doing. This month I want to look at some of the conclusions of the book.

Where are you? The Willow Creek Community Church in Barrington Illinois recently did an in depth survey of the church to ask that question. The result of that survey which was done principally by Greg L. Hawkins and Cally Parkinson was published in a small book entitled REVEAL. In this article we will take a look at the first part of that book.

In Luke 10, Luke tells of Jesus sending out the Seventy (two) and verse 17 tells us that they “returned with joy.” Only those who have gone out to serve the Lord in some way can truly appreciate the joy that comes from ‘going out’ and ‘serving’.

It has been correctly pointed out that our job isn’t to build the church. We’re supposed to BE the church, and build the kingdom. The best expression of the church is NOT what happens on Sunday morning. It’s what happens in the world during the week. And that’s not something you can market.”
